The XF-85 Goblin was designed to be carried by the Northrop B-35 and Convair B-36 bombers for defense against interceptors, much like the Curtiss F9C Sparowhawk did with the US Navy Airships Akron and Macon in 1929. Performance of the jet was marginal and the trapeze set up was difficult to use so only two aircraft were built and the project was cancelled in 1949.

The US Air Force bought two Bell 47 Ranger helicopters for Presidential use. On July 12, 1957, Dwight D. Eisenhower became the first President to use a helicopter while in office. They were standard Rangers except for the blue tinted bubble for sun protection, military radios and a rotor brake for quicker shutdowns. Both machines are on display, this one in Dayton and 57-2729 at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Washington.

This Provider on display at the National Museum of the USAF was accepted by the USAF in 1957 and saw extensive service in Vietnam as a 'Ranch Hand' sprayer (possibly the most ill-conceived and reckless program ever devised by the USAF). The aircraft took almost 600 hits in combat so was named 'Patches' for the damage repairs that covered it. In addition, seven of its crew received the Purple Heart for wounds received in the line of duty.

The Avro 504K was the first introduction to flying for many US pilots during WWI. The type proved very capable and was kept in service as one of the USAAS's primary trainers for years afterwards. This rebuilt example is on display at the National Museum of the USAF and painted to represent one of the 52 Avro 504K aerobatic trainers used at the AEF No. 3 Instruction Center, Issoudun, France during 1918.

The O-1 was developed from the commercial Cessna Model 170 (originally designated L-19s) and were used by the USAF, Army and Marine Corps for such tasks as artillery spotting, front-line comms, medivac and pilot training. In SE Asia they were also deployed on FAC duties but they were slow, lacking range and proved vunerable to ground fire. This led eventually to their replacement with O-2 Skymaster and OV-10 Bronco. This Bird Dog came to the National Museum of the USAF for display in 1971.

Developed from the T-33 Shooting Star the F-94 was the first US all-weather jet interceptor and the first US production jet to have an afterburner. Lockheed produced 853 F-94s of 110 were the A-version and this one was retired directly from active service to arrive at the National Museum of the USAF during May 1957.

During a training flight in Feb. 1970 this aircraft was involved in a miraculous incident after entering an uncontrollable spin that forced the pilot to eject. Unpiloted, the aircraft recovered on its own, apparently due to the balance and configuration changes caused by the ejection, and miraculously made a gentle belly landing in a snow-covered field. After minor repairs, the aircraft was returned to service and last served with the 49 FIS before being retired to the museum in 1996.

This beautiful old transport is actually 52-1066. She was retired from service to MASDC as CQ362 in September 1974 and had been quickly declared as surplus by November. Fortunately she was saved from the scrapman and is now on display at the incomparable National Museum of the USAF.

The Sikorsky-designed R-6A two-seat observation helicopter was a refined version of the R-4, the first AF helicopter to serve in a combat zone. First flown in Oct. 1943, the R-6A used the same rotor and transmission system as the R-4 but it had a more powerful Franklin engine. With its fuselage completely redesigned to reduce air resistance and improve pilot visibility the R-6A bore little resemblance to its boxy-looking predecessor. This example is on display at the National Museum of the USAF.

This P-63 is in reality 43-11728 but is on display at the National Museum of the USAF painted in the unusual colour scheme of a 'pinball' RP-63A. Aerial gunnery students fired at these manned target aircraft (RP-63A and RP-63C) using .30-cal. lead and plastic frangible machine gun bullets which disintegrated harmlessly against the target's external armor plating. Special instruments sent impulses to red lights in the nose of the 'pinball' aircraft, causing them to blink if a hit was registered.
