ERA Helicopters of Alaska established an offshore bases in Louisiana and Texas in the late 1970s to support offshore oil and gas exploration in the Gulf of Mexico. In the 1980s Era distinguished itself in the Gulf of Mexico by operating an all twin-engine helicopter fleet of MBB Bo 105s and Bell 412s, for which it was the launch customer, but single engine aircraft were added when it won contracts to fly Minerals Management Service (MMS) (now BSEE) inspectors monitoring offshore activity. Repossessed again in 1974, it was sold to ERA Helicopters in June 1975. Re-registered N204EH in late 1981,the aircraft was transferred to ERA Avation in 1985. Acquired by Skydive Factory in 1999, it has flown skydivers around the USA ever since.

Pictured being prepared for return to ERA Helicopters this Ecureuil 2 had been leased for the summer by Okanagan Helicopters as C-GXPO. Six years later on November 4, 1988, the helicopter was departing an offshore production platform in the Gulf of Mexico when the tail rotor drive shaft failed and it crashed after losing tail rotor function. It was found a coupling on the drive shaft was not up to normal every day use. Parts were re-designed and retro fitted to the AS355 fleet.
