A nostalgic stroll on what was intented to become NYC's main airport, but never reached this status. Now a true time capsule, as nothing has really changed since the airport (then a US Navy facility) was decommissioned in 1971.

The NY-3 trainer was a NY with a 240-hp Wright R-760 Whirlwind engine. 20 examples were built from 1929 and mainly served with reserve units. The second aircraft is BuNo 9411, a Berliner-Joyce OJ-2 observation aircraft ordered in May 1933. It was based here at NRAB Brooklyn - better known as Floyd Bennett Field - by 1936. It survived until 1941. Only one NY trainer was still reported in service in 1939. Photo from: Life

Constructed of stainless steel. For a flying boat, this at least made some sense, avoiding any corrosion problems. The aircraft was certainly durable: this four-seat prototype, preserved at the Golden Wings Musem in Minnesota, was still reported to be flying once a year in 2015. Five F-5 five-seaters were also built. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution

Roscoe Turner in the Meteor racer that was built for him. The photo must have been taken in 1939 as Champion was his sponsor that year. NC14267 was owned by Antarctic explorer Lincoln Ellsworth. When an accident forned the expedition to dock in Hobat, Tasmania, the Australian Government bought the aircraft for use in future Australian expeditions, That did not occur and instead it was used for airways calibration as VH-ADR . Impressed by the RAAF as A61-1 during World War II. Scrapped after an accident in 1943. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution
