Another picture of the first DC-2, this time in Kansas City with the Intercity Viaduct in the background. TWA abandoned its slogan 'The Lindbergh Line' in late 1938, and replaced it with 'The Transcontinental Line' titles. The two red tail stripes were introduced earlier. It looks like Stratoliner NC19907 was photographed after it was returned to TWA by the USAAF. The fleet of five aircraft was refurbished for $2 million by Boeing according to Wikipedia. They served with TWA until 1951. Photo from: Jackson County Historical Society

Date 'circa 1938': two DC-2s and two DC-3B Sky Sleepers, with NC17313 on the right, at TWA's Kansas headquarters. Another photos confirms registration NC17317 for fleet number 355. It was delivered in June 1937. The photo was probably taken not long thereafter. NC17317 was impressed as a C-49F, 42-56621. She collided with an impressed DST, ex NC18104 of United, over Camp Williams, Wisconsin on 24 June 1942. The DST survived. Photo from: SFO Museum

TWA had its headquarters in Kansas City. This is Hangar 1 at KMKC, now home to the TWA Museum. Maintenance moved to the B-25 plant in Fairfax, across the Missouri River, after WWII, but a flood destroyed that and the Kansas City Overhaul Base was built adjacent to what became Kansas City International Airport (KMCI). Here we see two DC-3B Sky Sleepers, the second being NC17317. They were delivered in mid-1937 and do not yet wear the slogan 'The Lindbergh Line' which disappeared again from late 1938. Constructed for and delivered to American Airlines in 1937 this is one of the oldest DC-3s around. Its last commercial use was as an agricultural sprayer for K&K Aircraft from 1985 until 2004 out of Bridgewater (VA). The aircraft was eventually bought by the Flagship Detroit Foundation in early 2005 who's aim it was to restore the DC-3 to its former glory. By the time this picture was taken the aircraft already recieved its origional American Airlines colours but still missing one engine.

The age of the mono-mailplane! On the right is a Northrop Alpha 4A, NC933Y, with Quality Hill in Kansas City in the background. NC12283 was delivered to TWA in May 1933. In 1935, after an accident, the Babb company rebuilt it, against the manufacturer's advice, with a Lockheed Explorer wing for Wiley Post. The hybrid, NR12283, crashed near Point Barrow, Alaska on 15 August 1935, taking the lives of Post and actor Will Rogers. Photo from: Jackson County Historical Society

Gulfstream ship No 97 spent the first seven years of its service life as the only G-II ever registered in Italy - as I-SMEG with VIP-AIR. Twenty years later, as N930SD, it belonged to the Philadelphia Eagles Football Club, seen here with modified nose cone, but still without winglets. - In 2018, the bizjet was noted as XB-ORW at Queretaro, Mexico, in good condition.

This is the view of the aircraft preserved outside at the TWA Museum. TWA used JetStars as pilot trainers so it is nice that the TWA Museum has added this example (although it never actually flew for the airline) to its collection at MKC.

This Mad Dog was originally delivered in October 1987 to Spantax (Guiness Peat, hence the subsequent use of its Irish reg.) as EC-EFJ (EC-102) and then to LAC (as EI-BWD) and BWIA (9Y-THT) before joining TWA and becoming the special 'Wings of Pride' logojet. Its last revenue flight for American was during Feb. 2014 before being banished to Roswell, so it's really great that the TWA Museum has saved this piece of airline history from the axeman.

A flying visit to MKC meant, unfortunately, that I had no time to enter properly the Airline HIstory Museum but it was still nice to see thise beautifully restored Classic just from the outside. Note N948TW in the background at the TWA Museum.
