VH-RRA was withdrawn from use in 1978 and stripped of useful parts. Despite having relatively few hours, the number of holes drilled in the fuselage and wings for experiments made it unsuitable for commercial use. The hull was used by the Sydney airport fire service until 1988 when it was scrapped completely.

First registered to the United Staes Army Air Force on the 21st of April 1945 44-76767 enered the RAAF as A65-97 and served with 35 Squadron in May 1945. Sold to the CSIRO on the 29th December 1964 and registered as VH-RRA.

CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) was a government research laboratory. The DC-3 was used for experimental work such as radio physics and rain-making until withdrawn from use in 1979.
