Experimental tiltwing aircraft converted from a Chase YC-122C, 49-2883. Strangely named Propelloplane by Hiller. Two Allison T40 turboprops from the XFV and XFY Pogo programmes but the X-18 also needed a J34 turbojet in the fuselage for jet reaction pitch control. First flown at Moffett Field on 24 November 1959, then moved to Edwards were photo is assumed to have been taken. A malfunction caused the aircraft to enter a spin on 20th flight in July 1962 but test pilot George Bright managed to land. Not flown again but damaged when its ground test platform collapsed and subsequently scrapped.

Delivered to JAL as JA8117 in 1972. To Boeing as N747BL then to NASA as N911NA in 1988. Withdrawn from use at Palmdale in 2012 and preserved there.

Powered by one T53 turboprop that drove two tilting ducted propellers, the VZ-4 was technically quite successful. The single airframe was built at Edmund Doak's factory at Torrance - Zamperini Field, California where the photograph was probably taken. Dayglo paint had been applied by the fall of 1959. Built as a UH-12D in 1959. Converterted to four-seat UH-12E4 'Flying Station Wagon' with a stretched fuselage. The East Palo Alto factory site can be recognized from our overview photo. Delivered to the USAAF as 44-76588 in 1945. Stored at Davis-Monthan AFB in 1968. Sold as N88916 in 1973. Reregistered as N67PA in 1974 and N131FS in 1988. To Flabob in 2015 and preserved in USAF markings.

Registered as N8426H then delivered to the USAF as 54-2809 in 1954. Stored at Davis-Monthan AFB with park code CS078 in 1985. Sold as N6288Y in 1996. Reregistered as N131CW in 1997. Still current on the register in 2021.

Registered as PT-SGO prior to delivery to Air Coach as N131EM in 1983. To San Juan Airlines in 1985 then to United Express/Westair Commuter Airlines in 1986. To Tranzair/Rex Aviation as ZK-TRK in 1991 then to Lincoln Airlines as VH-LNC in 1993. To ASA Airlines of South Australia in 1998 then to Air North Regional in 2003 and used for parts at Port Lincoln, South Australia. Later scrapped.

Delivered to the USAAF as 43-15196 in 1944. To N1472V in 1954, N3G, N241AG in 1956, N444G, N206PP in 1963, N208R in 1964, N32342 in 1982 and Baja Air as XA-HOE in 1985. Later to Aero California Pacifico as XA-RPI. Fate unknown.

Delivered USAir in May 1989. That became US Airways in February 1997. Over to PAL-Principal Airlines in September 2013, for one year only. Returned to lessor October 2014.. Over to Swiftair in May 2015. To iAero Airways in 2019 and current at date of upload.

Delivered to USAir in June 1991. Leased to British Airways (in full BA cs) between May '93 and july '96. Damgaed beyond repair after engine explosion 21 Sept 2000.

Race modified F8F-2 USN Bureau Number 122629 owned by Mr. Lyle Shelton in 1973. A few weeks before this slide was taken N777L, with Mr. Shelton flying, won the 1973 Reno Unlimited Class Race with an average speed of 428.16 MPH. On 21 August 1989 Mr. Shelton & N777L set a piston engine speed record of 528.33 MPH (850.26 KM/HR). Now owned by Mr. Rod Lewis of San Antonio, TX.

Race modified F8F-2 Bureau Number 121646 owned by Mr. Darryl Greenamyer. This aircraft, with Greenamyer flying, won six unlimited race championships. On 16 August 1969 Greenamyer set a speed record for piston engine aircraft of 483 MPH (777 KM/HR) using this aircraft. Mr. Greenamyer donated N1111L to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in 1977, where it is on display in its later livery as "American Jet".

This is one of two S-28Ts owned by Heli-Flite Inc, doing business as ARIS Helicopters. Originally an H-34A Choctaw delivered to the French Air Force circa 1958. Registered N1168U after Air Force service, the helicopter was damaged on April 14, 1989. Taxiing with a load of cargo, the right landing gear failed due to cracks and corrosion passing over a drainage depression. The helicopter rolled on it's side. It was rebuilt circa 2002 and converted to turbine power. The aircraft is current with ARIS at the time of uploading.

With Trans World Airlines from May 1983 (an American Airline subsidiary re-organized as TWA Airlines LLC after December 2001) until registered to American Airlines in December 2003. The aircraft was withdrawn and stored at Roswell, NM in 2007, later broken up.

Delivered new 19th March 1990 and made its last flight KDFW-KROW (Roswell) 30th Dec 2013 with TT 74575 hours and 26651 cycles on arrival. Scrapped in 2014
