Experimental tiltwing aircraft converted from a Chase YC-122C, 49-2883. Strangely named Propelloplane by Hiller. Two Allison T40 turboprops from the XFV and XFY Pogo programmes but the X-18 also needed a J34 turbojet in the fuselage for jet reaction pitch control. First flown at Moffett Field on 24 November 1959, then moved to Edwards were photo is assumed to have been taken. A malfunction caused the aircraft to enter a spin on 20th flight in July 1962 but test pilot George Bright managed to land. Not flown again but damaged when its ground test platform collapsed and subsequently scrapped.

Powered by one T53 turboprop that drove two tilting ducted propellers, the VZ-4 was technically quite successful. The single airframe was built at Edmund Doak's factory at Torrance - Zamperini Field, California where the photograph was probably taken. Dayglo paint had been applied by the fall of 1959. This is one of two S-28Ts owned by Heli-Flite Inc, doing business as ARIS Helicopters. Originally an H-34A Choctaw delivered to the French Air Force circa 1958. Registered N1168U after Air Force service, the helicopter was damaged on April 14, 1989. Taxiing with a load of cargo, the right landing gear failed due to cracks and corrosion passing over a drainage depression. The helicopter rolled on it's side. It was rebuilt circa 2002 and converted to turbine power. The aircraft is current with ARIS at the time of uploading.
