The unregistered protototype Baby shortly before its first flight on 30 April 1919 from Hamble, when it spun in on the nearby foreshore because the pilot cut the ignition switches inadvertently. At the Aviation Museum at YMMB. Designed by Ronald Gilbert Wheeler in 1974-75, probably the most basic 3-axis flying machine in the world, the "forefather" of all Australian ultralights, it was the first commercially available aircraft in its class. Equipped with an 8 hp lawnmower engine, it utilised rudder and elevator for yaw and pitch, and wing warping for roll. The Australian Government regulations of 1976 restricted flight operations of such aircraft to no higher than 300 feet AGL

Flew April 1943 as a tandem 2-seater with parasol wing. Crashed Benalla during a winch launch at club's 1948/49 summer camp. It had done 2600 flights for the club. Wreckage sold to RAAF Forest Hill and rebuilt by cadets. New fuselage but wing and tail from original. Crashed. Sold to Canberra Gliding Club and rebuilt as seen in photo. Crashed Cootamundra on December 27, 1959 when wing detached after casting off from an aero tow.

Investigators examine the wreckage of the Merlin glider of the Canberra Gliding Club, which crashed on 27 December 1959 when its wing detached soon after casting off from an aero tow. Pilot killed. The wing strut to fuselage attachments were inadequate, as the result of a rebuilt after an earlier accident. The unregistered glider first flew in 1943 and had made several thousand flights before the fatal final rebuild. Gliding was unregulated in 1943 with no registration or type approvals required. When gliding became regulated in the 1950s, existing gliders did not have to comply.

After having visited the aviation exposition ILA Frankfurt in 1909, a group of 14 to 16 year old grammar school pupils became so enthusiastic that they founded the Flug-Sport-Vereinigung Darmstadt on 25-Aug-1909. They started to build several types of gliders and test flying them. On 22-Jul-1912 Hans Gutermuth flew their FSV-10 a distance of 840m in 1 min 50 sec at the Wasserkuppe, which at that time was a new glider world record. The photo shows the replica built by the Deutsches Segelflugmuseum.

Designed by Luigi Pellarini, the Tanker was a predecessor of the Transavia Airtruk. The Tanker used an Armstrong Siddeley Cheetah engine and first flew in 1956 from Bankstown. It failed to win interest from cropdusting firms and the project was stopped. The PL7 was never certified or registered. It was damaged in a hangar fire and scrapped in 1962. Pellarini moved to New Zealand where he developed the Bennett Airtruck using T-6 parts before returning to Australia to design the Transavia Airtruk. Photo by Col Peck.
