Lionair operated a series of Caribbean charters from Manchester and Gatwick in 1988/89 for Airtours with this ex-Pan Am 747 using the Orionair AOC and crews, along with LX-FCV. Not long before going out of business, Orionair operated a third 747 in 1989 (N751PA) but that quickly gained a notorious reputation for reliability on UK services. LX-GCV was originally N770PA and joined Corse Air as F-GKLJ in 6.91. Stored at Chateauroux and b/u by 2002

Delivered to Pan Am in 1970 and seen here taxiing for a 27R departure with the non-standard wide cheatline, the registration of this particular jumbo reminds me of an early Pan Am advertising campaign which said "Our 747 is so different we're tempted to call it the 748!". Little did they realise what a laugh they were giving anyone in the know. Retired to Marana and scrapped in 1993

"Clipper Westwind" taxies out for departure. Later "Clipper Queen of the Seas", the 747 was delivered to Pan Am April 24, 1970 and left for TWA December 1988. Evergreen International bought the aircraft in July 1989 and converted to a freighter. It was finally scrapped at Marana, AZ in 2001.

Leased by Eastern from 26 November 1970 until return to Pan American on 30 April 1972.

This was the fourteenth 747 to be built, serving Pan Am from February 1970 until it was damaged landing at Karachi in August 1983.

"Clipper Defender" served Pan Am from new in February 1970 until being damaged at Karachi in August 1983.

When the British Orion Air folded in 1989, the Raleigh-based operators of this ex-Pan Am 747 acquired in 3.89 had the name all to themselves. But they too went under next year after operating Air Europe charters from the UK, during which time this 747 was dubbed 'The Flying Pig' due to serious unreliability causing massive delays.
