On 27th April 1942, this aircraft from 35 Squadron took off rom RAF Kinloss to attack the German Battleship Tirpitz moored in Fættenfjord in Norway. Mines were dropped near the ship but the aircraft was hit and force landed on the frozen Lake Hoklingen. The ensuing fire caused the aircraft to sink. It was recovered in 1973 and allocated RAF maintenance serial 8465M. It is displayed with no attempt at restoration, simply conservation work having been carried out to prevent further deterioration. Note that serial, code and roundel are still visible on the rear fuselage.

Built in 1948 the aircraft was operated at Boscombe Down by the Empire Test Pilot School and as a glider tug. It became G-BDCC fitted with a Lycoming engine and used as a tug at the gliding club at Husbands Bosworth until it was severely damaged in 1999. It is being rebuilt as part of the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection, an interesting museum which only opened in July 2012

Delivered to the Airforce in August 1985 the mid fuselage was later used to repair an F3, ZE251. This cockpit section was mounted on a rig at Boscombe Down and used for trials. It is now one of many nose sections at the Boscombe Down Aviation Collection, formed in 2012, a museum that is well worth a visit, Andover XS790 is behind and a BAC1-11 cockpit can be seen on the right.

First flown in May 1917 the Dolphin fighter was an innovative design. The pilot sat with his head above the top wing, affording an excellent view, but he could not see the nose of his own aircraft and use it as a reference. Armament was no less than four machine guns, of which two fired upwards, as seen here; the latter were often removed, however. The Dolphin did well in combat, but its Hispano-Suiza engine was unreliable and troublesome, and the type was quickly retired after the end of WWI.
