As early as 1915, Hugo Junkers was working on an all-metal low-wing aircraft. This innovative concept was rejected by the Luftstreitkräfte despite the duralumin structure that offered pilots relatively greater safety. Finally, the J.9 design was approved, designated D-I but only arrived to front line pilots in the last months of the war. Despite the qualities of speed and maneuverability, only 41 copies were built, in particular due to a difficult construction. This plane is the only extant example that survives today.

Delivered to Farnborough as AM101 5 Sept.1945. To RAE 30 April 1946, flew as AM101 to 12 May 1946 but as VP546 as from 15 May 1946. Flying from RNAS Ford, Lt.Cdr.Eric Brown used it for deck landings on HMS Triumph 28/29 May 1946, the only German aircraft to have landed on a RN aircraft-carrier. Allocated 7362M 26 July 1956 for possible use as ground instruction but found unsuitable. To Air Historical Branch collection 10 Oct.1956, to Coltishall ca.1963 until it went to the Historic Aircraft Collection at St.Athan June 1973. To Cosford 6 April 1989, where it has been displayed in recent years.

This Fitter-K was originally 590 with the NVA. After German re-unification it became 2527 and the 9809. The plane was transferred to the AdlA for testing at Mont de Marsan AB and then donated to the museum for preservation.

The Junkers CL.I metal attack aircraft first flew on 4 May 1918. A small series was built, including three CLS.I seaplanes. The German army's CL aircraft category was for light armed reconnaissance aircraft. In practice there was little difference with regular C class aircraft and this plane has a C class serial number. The Ju 388 was the final development of the Ju 88, a high-altitude aircraft planned in Ju 388J fighter, Ju 388K bomber and Ju 388L recce variants. The amazing Margaret Bourke-White photographed a downed Ju 88 on a square in Russia in 1941. Four years later, she entered Leipzig two days after the first American troops and photographed these Ju 388s, presumably L-1 versions, in a bombed ATG factory building.
