The Luftwaffe's Jagdgeschwader 73 was established in December 1959 at Oldenburg with Canadair Sabre Mk 6s. The unit's badge can be seen on the tail of the museum's example. Like many German units, JG 73 is named Steinhoff in honour of the former fighter pilot Johannes Steinhoff whose career spanned service in WW2, participation in the so-called fighter pilot mutiny against Herman Göring in 1945, and Chairman of Nato's Military Committee.
