The Manchester was the twin-engined precursor of the Lancaster. One of the troublesome Rolls-Royce Vulture engines is being worked on here. Unfortunately IWM do not provide known dates for many of their photographs, but L7279, the fourth production aircraft, was the first Manchester to be delivered to No 207 Sqn at Waddington on 6 November 1940 and the photo was taken soon thereafter. L7279 flew only a single combat mission before being relegated to training duties. Photo by: Bertrand John Daventry / Imperial War Museums

Part of the RAF's Long-Range Development Unit Flight that flew non-stop from Egypt to Australia. L2638 was LR1, the lead aircraft. The library caption on this photo says it is at RAAF Pearce but by the time the remaining two LRDU aircraft arrived at Pearce L2638 had already been written off. It had suffered an engine failure near Richmond, NSW. Date of this incident is unclear. The damaged L2638 was dismantled and shipped back to the UK from Sydney. Dismantled components of XK625 "12" (ex-8FTS) and XD527 "46", ex-Aviation Traders who had contemplated the conversion of Vampire T.11s into an executive jet. XK625 was subsequently reassembled and put on display with the HAM (Southend). It passed to North Weald in November 1983 following the closure of the museum. Subsequently to the Romney Marsh Wartime Collection, Kent. XD527 passed to the fire dump at Manston where it was reduced to a pod only by March 1986 and totally burned out by November 1987.
