This Type XII, on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center, is a very significant early airplane, being a prime example of pre-WWI aeronautical technology. Most American aircraft produced during this period were direct copies of Wright, Curtiss or European machines. Benoist was one of the very few US firms building and selling original designs during this pioneer era. This aircraft was built by the Korn brothers in St. Louis in 1912 and donated to the NASM in 1949.

The XO-60 represents the final evolution of the Autogiro before the type became obsolete. The slow loitering speeds and almost vertical takeoff and landing abilities of the XO-60 made it ideal for military observation duties. However, the inability to hover sealed the fate of the Autogiro after the development of helicopters. This XO-60 was fully restored by the NASM in 1975 and is now on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.

This Caudron, on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center, is among the oldest surviving bomber aircraft and one of the very few remaining multi-engine aircraft extant from WWI. The term 'Blindage 16K' is marked on the rudders, probably indicating that the aircraft was an innovative G.4IB armoured Caudron. The armour consisted of a heavy metal plate (now missing) inserted behind the seat of the rear cockpit, protruding upward so as to cover the back and head of the pilot.

The C-4C was part of a family of biplanes developed by the Kreider-Reisner Aircraft Company to satisfy the need for a lighter and more efficient all-around aircraft to replace the ageing Jennies and Standards of the immediate post WWI era. This example on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center was manufactured in Aug. 1929, several months after Fairchild acquired Kreider-Reisner. However the data plate reflects the Kreider-Reisner C-4C Challenger designation, rather than the subsequent Fairchild KR-34 label.

This C-121 served with the 193rd Tactical Electronic Warfare Group at Olmstead AFB, PA until Nov.1977, when it was retired after 21 years to MASDC. This N3N is on display at the super Udvar-Hazy Center of the NASM but was previously part of the Naval Academy's training squadron at Annapolis, Maryland. The N3N nickname of the 'Yellow Peril' derived from the aircraft's propensity to ground loop on landing as the narrow landing gear did not provide much lateral stability at higher touchdown speeds. These seaplanes, when retired in 1961, were the last biplanes retired from US military service.

This Huey compiled a distinguished record in Vietnam from 1966 to 1970 during which it completed four combat tours. Numerous patches on its skin attest to the ferocity of missions flown while operating as a 'Smoke Ship', laying down smokescreens for air assault operations with the 11th Combat Aviation Battalion. The National Air and Space Museum acquired the aircraft in 1995 and it is now on display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.

In 1950, the Airphibian became the first roadworthy aircraft to receive a type certificate from the CAA. It was a technical success but the inherent compromises necessary in the design meant that the performance specs were disappointing. The H-19/HRS-1 was the first practical single-rotor utility helicopter and the first in Sikorsky's successful S-55 series. The centre-of-gravity problems of earlier models were solved by shifting the engine to the front and the passenger compartment to beneath the rotor hub. Other innovations included offset-flapping hinges and hydraulically boosted irreversible controls. This example is now on display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the Smithsonian NASM.
