In 1950, the Airphibian became the first roadworthy aircraft to receive a type certificate from the CAA. It was a technical success but the inherent compromises necessary in the design meant that the performance specs were disappointing. This very interesting piece of aviation history is on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.
