Horten craftsmen built this glider in 1944 at Göttingen. It probably first flew as a two-seat Horten IIIg but was modified into a single-seat glider, with special test apparatus installed to measure angle-of-attack, yaw and speed, leading to the change of designation to IIIh. The British found this glider at Rottweil, approximately 100 km (60 miles) southwest of Stuttgart in 1945 'in perfect condition'. Precisely what happened between then and it becoming part of the NASM collection is unknown.

This Fw 190, on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center, was built in late 1943 as the A-7 fighter 640049. After suffering combat damage it was repaired and remanufactured into an Fw 190 F-8 fighter-bomber with a new Werk-Nummer. The conversion involved fitting a new wing and bomb racks to the original fuselage and adding armour plate around and beneath the cockpit. Reissued to the Luftwaffe, the aircraft flew on the Eastern Front, probably with SG 2 based in Hungary in Oct. 1944.

One of the most famous of all US aircraft is the Curtiss JN-4D Jenny, with more than 90% of American pilots during WWI receiving their primary instruction on the type. This example, one the first 25 of 585 built under licence by the Springfield Aircraft Corporation of Springfield, MA is on display at the Smithsonian NASM's Udvar-Hazy Center. It had been briefly in use as a US Air Service trainer at Hazelhurst Field at Mineola, NY before being acquired by the museum in Nov. 1918.

This FB-5 is on display at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. This Hawk was assigned to Navy Squadron VF-1, aboard the USS Langley, in Jan. 1927. After eight months it was transferred to VF-6B aboard the USS Saratoga and then to VF-3B at San Diego in April 1928. Afer some modifications it was assigned to Marine fighter squadron VF-6M on March, 1930, serving briefly with that unit until being stricken from the Navy inventory in July 1930.

The Aeronca C-2 was the first truly light aeroplane certified by the Bureau of Aeronautics and produced in quantity in the US. This C-2 is the production prototype, first flying on 20th October, 1929. In total 294 examples of this superb night-fighter were constructed. Advanced features included cannons mounted to fire at an oblique angle, the first steerable nosewheel on an operational German aircraft and the world's first ejection seats on an operational aircraft. This Uhu (Eagle Owl) was recovered from Grove in Denmark and shipped to the US in 1945 aboard HMS Reaper. The He 219 A-2 wing is under restoration and will be re-assembled with the fuselage and engines on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.

In total 294 examples of this superb night-fighter were constructed. Advanced features included cannons mounted to fire at an oblique angle, the first steerable nosewheel on an operational German aircraft and the world's first ejection seats on an operational aircraft. This Uhu (Eagle Owl) was recovered from Grove in Denmark and shipped to the US in 1945 aboard HMS Reaper. The He 219 A-2 wing is under restoration and will be re-assembled with the fuselage and engines on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.
