This aircraft is painted in the colours that flown by FL Jack Cleland (RNZAF) in the 8th USAF, 357 FG, 361 FS during WWII. There appears to be some confusion in the previous identities of this airframe, possibly arising from rebuild after a crash in 1977, although she was built in 1944 and delivered to the USAF as 44-73415.

This PBY has now been moved to a new outside hardstand at Cosford to free up space for the incoming arrivals from Hendon. It was completed in April 1945 at the new Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation (Convair) factory at New Orleans for delivery to the USN as 63993. From Dec. 57 to Jul. 70 it served with the RDAF and is now on display at the RAF Museum.

Correct serial is XN962. This aircraft was delivered to the Royal Navy during July 1964 and served at Lossiemouth until 1970. Thereafter she was transferred to St. Athan and allocated the Maintenance serial 8181M before being moved to PEE (Proof & Experimental Establishment) at Foulness 1986. Unfortunately the axeman came calling and she was broken up in 1992, although the nose section has at least survived and is now on display at Cosford.

The FD-2 was Fairey's attempt to investigate flight and control characteristics of the delta-wing design at trans and supersonic speeds. This aircraft's sister plane (WG774) broke the world speed record in 1956 by more than 300 mph, quite an achievement considering the record had been set only a year previously by a F-100.

The Ohka (Cherry Blossom) was a purpose-built, rocket-powered kamikaze plane. Its short range made its missions almost as deadly for the crews of the launching G4M2 'Betty' bombers as for the suicide pilots themselves, but a few US ships were sunk or damaged by Ohka attacks in the spring of 1945. This machine was coded I-13 on the nose when it was captured on Okinawa. It carries the number 10461 on the wing root which I presume is the serial number.

This research aircraft was built to test the slow speed handling of a sharply swept wing as used on the English Electric Lightning. The wing could be mounted at 50, 60 or 69 degrees of sweep and the tail section with low-set tailplane seen here could be replaced with a T-tail. The undercarriage was not retractable.

The M.1 fighter was an advanced aircraft when it first flew in 1916. Due to wariness about its monoplane configuration and landing speed, it was built in limited numbers and only saw some frontline service in the Middle East and Balkans theatres of WWI. This replica made a few flights in 1987. It was then acquired by the RAF Museum, given an original Le Rhône engine and painted as an aircraft of an instructor flying school of the RFC, C4994.

Developed from the Lancaster, the Lincoln bomber came too late to see action in WWII. 600 examples were built, but it was visibly unfit for the jet age.

The TSR-2 exemplifies one of the saddest episodes in the long history of British aviation, leading to this famous quote from renowned aircraft designer Sir Sydney Camm "All modern aircraft have four dimensions: span, length, height and politics. TSR-2 simply got the first three right." This aircraft never actually flew, rather had almost been completed when the programme was cancelled. One of the absolute highlights of the wonderful RAF museum at Cosford.
