Once production had started, it was decided that the Hotspur was too small to be used in operations. Instead, due to the good handling characteristics, it became the main training glider for the Army and over 1,000 were produced, mainly by furniture manufacturers. The CG-4A was first delivered to the Glider Pilot Regiment in 1943 and, although the larger Horsa was preferred, used throughout the remainder of WWII. This exhibit is based around an original CG-4 frame that was obtained by the MoAF from France in 1985.

The Kirby Kite was developed in the 1930s as a civilian sport glider. Upon the outbreak of WWII almost all Kits were impressed into military service by the RAF. A Kirby Kite was also used in 1940 radar detection trials to discover if wooden gliders (aircraft) could be detected by coastal early warning systems. This glider was previously allocated the registration G-ALNH.

The Bird Dog was developed in the late 1940 as an obervation and liason aeroplane for the US Army. The type was flown by UK Army pilots during the Korean War in support of ground troops and was, in fact, preferred by many British officers to the Auster Mk.9. The US Army presented this example to the MoAF in 1982.

This is a pre-production Lynx and has the claim to fame in that it was the first helicopter to do a barrel roll. This was enabled by the innovative rotor head design that even allowed it to fly backwards at up to 80 mph. XX153 was used for training, air shows and equipment trials before being restored to static display standard by trainees at Westland Helicopters.
