The Kirby Kite was developed in the 1930s as a civilian sport glider. Upon the outbreak of WWII almost all Kits were impressed into military service by the RAF. A Kirby Kite was also used in 1940 radar detection trials to discover if wooden gliders (aircraft) could be detected by coastal early warning systems. This glider was previously allocated the registration G-ALNH. This photo is copyright © Alastair T. Gardiner, and may not be used or published in any way without permission.
