Norway was an early participant in NATO's pilot training programmes in North America leaving only ab-initio training and pilot selection in Norway. Initially this was performed by Cornells and Harvards, but from 1956 the Safir was used. 341 was taken on charge 18 April 1957, initially as 57-341 U-AV (U being the aircraft type code and AV the individual aircraft code), then 341.
