Painted to represent an AC-47 'Spooky', in actuality the 37th Troop Carrier Squadron flew this Skytrain in WWII and airdropped 82nd Airborne Division soldiers during the parachute assaults of the Normandy invasion and also in Operation Market Garden. It served in another famous campaign post-war when it was part of the Berlin Airlift. Then taken on charge by the Turk Hava Kuvvetleri, it returned to the US in 1954 and joined the Indiana ANG, later transferred to the Ohio ANG. By 1979 it was on display here at Hurlburt in camouflage, as per my photo here for comparison

23 Oct 43: TOS USAAF. 11/43: 37th Troop Carrier Squadron, England. 6/6/44: Dropped paratroopers from the 505th PIR, 82nd Abn Div.. 9/44: Flew in Operation Market Garden. UNK: Suffered combat damage during WWII. After 4/45: Assigned to the 61st, 12th, and 60th Troop Carrier Groups in Germany. By 1948: 7290th Air Base Group, Germany. Flew in Berlin Airlift. 1/49: Loaned to Turkish Air Force. By 11/54: Returned to USAF, 169th FBS/126th FBG (ANG), Greater Peoria Airport, IL. By 1971: Ohio ANG at Springfield, OH. 9 Jun 93: Air Commando Park, Hurlburt Field, FL.

Delivered to USAAF 23 October 1943. Participated in Operation Overlord (D-Day, 6 June 1944). After WWII it remained in Europe and was used in the Berlin Airlift. Transferred to Turkish Air Force in 1949, returned to U.S. in 1970, assigned to Ohio ANG. On 9 June 1973 it was dedicated in the Air Park, having been modified to represent an AC-47D.

Assigned to the 162nd Tactical Fighter Wing, Ohio Air National Guard (ANG), Springfield, Ohio .

This C-47A Skytrain has served the USAF since new in April 1944. From 1973 it has been on display at Hurlburt Field wearing special operations camouflage and incorrect fiscal year in the serial "AF42-510". Correct serial is 43-15510.
