The XFV-1 was in competition with the equally precarious Convair XFY-1 Pogo (my photo #21684) in 1954 for a high performance fighter that could be vertically launched from small platforms on ships. The sheer difficulty in flying these bizarre designs together with the rapid advance of conventional jets led to these projects being quickly abandoned. This was the second of two XFV-1s built and was not completed. Some sources say this survivor is actually the first (BuNo 138657), others that it was completed for display using parts from the first.

This Canberra was built as a B.2 by Handley Page at Radlett, being delivered to the RAF in 1953 for familiarisation and work-ups by Canberra PR.3 crews with 540 Sqdn at RAF Benson. Moved to 57 Sqdn at Cottesmore and eventually sold to BAC in 1969, 'B' Class marks of G27-182 being allocated. After around five years it was re-delivered to the Royal Navy, now configured as a TT.18 target tug for the FRADU at Yeovilton, even completing a first sojourn in Florida when detached to NAS Key West in 1978. After storage at St Athan from 1989, sold in the US for trials work and moved to VAC in 2012

The third from last of the 199 Tigers built for the USN. Not sure about the authenticity of the colours, but this aircraft did fly with the Blue Angels in the early 1960s and also VT-23 before being SOC at MCAS Cherry Point in 1964. Ironically, the museum's other Tiger, an early F9F-9 (redesignated F-11F-1 in 1955), is painted in Blue Angels colours despite not having been used by them.

This long-standing monument at Orlando MCO commemorates the SAC operation here long before the current airport was developed on the site of McCoy AFB, which had B-52Ds based from 1961 to 1974. The base, which used to be Pinecastle AFB, was renamed in 1958 after Col McCoy who was killed in a B-47 crash nearby.

This 1-11 is an important one in that it survives as one of the few potentially flyable example remaining. First registered in 1967 as N270E, it served various US corporations and was sold to Rockwell International Corp in April 1971, becoming N44R, a registration previously used by the company on an F-27 and before that a CV-440, and later on a B727. Seen here arriving at Southend for attention by ATEL, it was again sold in 1977 as N524AC, changed to N87BL in 1996 and N999BW in 1998. It is now stored at Kansas City with an organisation called Tristar Experience.
