This Spitfire was taken on charge shortly after the end of WW2 in Europe and operated with 595 Sqdn, 695 Sqdn, 1 CAACU and 2 CAACU till January 1957 when an accident at RAF Little Snoring grounded it. After use as a gate guard at RAF Horsham St Faith (nowadays Norwich Airport) and a period at Duxford it took on similar duties at RAF Coltishall from 1966, remaining there till the end of 1988, after which it was sent to St Athan. Sold in the US, it was registered N2289J in 1994 and later moved to Canada and Germany. In 2019 it was said to be destined to return to the UK.

VN479 was built at South Marston and soon after shipped to the Far East. The IWM does not give a location for the photo. However it does look like it is fresh off the production line. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Built as Spitfire Ia, L1004 was modified as the prototype of the PR.13. After some period as a test aircraft it did briefly return to an operational squadron. An accident in April 1944 appears to have been the end of its career. Where the photo was taken is not known. The conversion appears to been done by Heston Aircraft at Heston aerodrome (now closed) and part of the test program was conducted at Boscombe Down. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

DR845 was the prototype for Griffin-engined Spitfires. Originally designated Mk. IV, it was changed to Mk.XX (or F20) to avoid confusion with the PR.IV. The pristine condition of the aircraft suggests the photo was taken around the time of its first flight on November 27, 1941. That flight took place at Worthy Down (airfield closed in 1960 but site remained a defence establishment at the time of upload) and that has been used here. However, no location was provided by the IWM. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Photo taken at either South Marston, where it was built, or Eastleigh (Southampton) where it received a Supermarine Spiteful fin in January 1945. It would later receive a contra-rotating propeller. LA215 did eventually have a short service career before being scrapped. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
