There was still a lot of dust in the air when we arrived at Broken Hill for the Antique Aeroplane Association of Australia's Auster Rally. Here we're looking east. Earlier in the week huge dust storms originating in the desert to the north west had blotted out Broken Hill and had even badly affected Sydney, 600 miles to the east. Photo taken from Cessna 175A VH-RFU.

There were no fences to keep people out as the air race competitors arrived at Bankstown and even small children wandered freely among the aircraft. No one seemed perturbed and everyone went home intact. VH-UEF was not to see the year out when it plunged into the ground near Ballarat, Victoria, on October 31.
