More spectators than passengers at Schiphol in the 1930s. You could go on a 'rondleiding' (guided tour). When WWII came to Holland in May 1940, Edelvalk (lanner falcon) was based in Portugal, apparently to provide support for the DC-3s serving KLM's Far East route, of which the European terminus was then Naples. She was the only DC-2 to join the KLM operation in England, becoming G-AGBH. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

The Junkers from Nazi Germany is parked between KLM's Fokker F.XXXVI PH-AJA Arend and DC-2 PH-ALD Djalak. The other Ju 52 is probably of ABA. D-ASIH crashed in the French Alps on 3 December 1936 coming from Lisbon. All six occupants died. It was on a non-scheduled passenger flight and interestingly ju52archiv.de indicates that D-ASIH served with the Regierungsstaffel (government flight) for some time at least. Schiphol's spotting corner. The presence of a Bloch MB.220, the second aircraft in the second row, dates the photo in March 1938 at the earliest. PH-AKT Toekan, registered in May 1935, was captured by the German invaders in May 1940. Luftwaffe service as NA-LA seems to have been very brief as it was apparently D-AIAV of Lufthansa when it crashed on 9 August 1940 at Lämershagen near Bielefeld due to pilot error. Two passengers died. Photo from: Amsterdam City Archives

A rare photo of this KLM DC-2, which flew for five years nevertheless until destroyed by bombing here on 10 May 1940. The captain is waving, obviously aware of the photographer's presence. The DC-2 initally served on the intercontinental Holland - Java route and this one is named Perkoetoet (zebra dove), a singing dove species which is popular as a pet in Indonesia. The third of four prototypes of a fighter developed to specification E.1/44. The first was wrecked during transport to Boscombe Down. The second suffered poor handing and the third was fitted with a revised fin and tailplane. It still failed to impress the RAF and the fourth aircraft was not completed. TX148 was briefly used a test bed at Farnborough and then scrapped. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

A very pretty Pander E, thought to be new here in the summer of 1930. It was purchased by Mr In 't Veen who applied the name Vlinder (butterfly) at least on the right hand side. The Dutch flag in a circle shape on the rudder is uncommon. The aircraft was sold to the Nationale Luchtvaart School (NLS) in 1932 and destroyed by German bombs here at Waalhaven in May 1940. The Do 28D Skyservant prototype, first flown on 23 February 1966. The Do 28D was in fact a new design, not a cubist variant of the Do 28 of which a few examples are seen on the ground at the factory. D-INTL to D-IBUN and N7154 of Butler Aviation. Crashed on 6 December 1968 near Sønderborg, Denmark. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Instead of the big Fokker F.XXXVI (F.36), KLM selected the Douglas DC-2. On the right is not the sole F.XXVI but a smaller F.XXII, PH-AJP Papegaai. The DC-2 Gaai was KLM's second example, after PH-AJU Uiver. It arrived in the port of Rotterdam in April 1935. Delivered through Fokker with 'line number' 13, it was already lost on 20 July in a crash in Switzerland which killed everyone on board. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Forerunner of the Do 27. Two protypes were built in Spain by CASA in Seville in 1954 and flown to Getafe for testing. This is the second, which had its Elizalde Tigre engine replaced with a Continental O-470, as seen here, in 1955. The aircraft was taken to Germany where production of the Do 27 was set up. Information from Johan Visschedijk who says that the Do 27 P2 returned to Spain in 1956 with an unknown fate, but aire.org indicates that it became D-EBHC in 1961.
