The BAe 146STA (Sideloading Tactical Airlifter) was intended as a military transport based on the 146QT cargo aircraft, with the same left rear cargo door. This demonstrator, fitted with a dummy refuelling probe and an air-openable paratroop door, was the second 146 to be built (G-SSHH). Despite extensive demonstration tours but there were no orders. The aircraft eventually went to National Jet in Australia as VH-NJV

Tragically that night, a Queen Air contracted to carry excess cargo from VH-JJY crashed claiming the life of the pilot. VH-JJY, which was owned by Ansett Transport Industries, was stored at Brisbane following the collapse of Ansett in 2001. It was ferried to the UK in 2005 and sold in Sweden as SE-DRN in 2006.
