On the late Evening 28th July 2023 28 (AC) Chinook ZD575 suffered a rear engine technical issue while on Exercise Kukri Dawn from RAF Valley in Anglesey. This forced the crew to put her down in a field near the village of Arthog near Dolgellau in North Wales, narrowly missing overhead power lines. This spot is next to the River Mawddach. The crew were taken in by local villagers offering refreshments. In the image you can see heavy lifting equipment ready to lift the Chinook out from the soft ground and place her on a more solid surface. The Chinook recovered safely to RAF Benson later this day.

'JASDF personnel from Naha, Japan, disembark from a JASDF CH-47 helicopter at Kadena.' Thus the squadron within the Rescue Wing is probably Naha Kyunantai. For some reason this young Chinook was withdrawn from use and scrapped in 2002. It was delivered in 1989. In the peculiar JASDF serial system, the first digit is the last digit of the year of delivery, the second digit is for the aircraft type (the F-4 Phantom also has 7) and the third digit is for a role/aircraft class, in this case 4 for helicopters. Delivered to the USAr as CH-47A as 63-07919. It was accepted on 29 Oct'64. The Alpha was converted to Delta with serial 87-00082 and redelivered on 26 Feb'88. It was assigned to A/5-159th AVN and later stored at Ramstein (Germany) from Oct'97. It left that base on 4 Feb'98 for possibly Gulfport-Biloxi RAP (MS) and was stored with 1108th AVCRAD MS ARNG. Then moved to CCAD at Corpus Christi (TX) in Apr'98. After several operational assignments, it was converted to CH-47F with serial 11-08096 (c/n M8096) and redelivered on 12 Sep'11. It is seen here supporting a deliver of the first Dutch Apaches
