Called the 'Streamline Gunbus', the FB.9 was a development of the FB.5 Gunbus. 95 examples were built for the Royal Flying Corps by Vickers and 24 by Darracq, a French car manufacturer. Seven of the latter, including 7826, were used operationally by No 11 Sqn in the summer of 1916, fighting in the Battle of the Somme. Otherwise the FB.9 was used as a trainer. A cliff on the island of Sylt was used to launch gliders from and this was probably why seaplane gliders were conceived in Germany. The well-known glider pilot Ernst Jachtmann designed and built this aircraft. Jachtmann was a Lufthansa pilot around 1940 and the sole Jacht 71 was operated by the NSFK-Gruppe Lufthansa. An adaption of the Vickers Vimy Commercial by ANF Les Mureaux (Ateliers de construction du Nord de la France), powered by two 370-hp Lorraine 12 engines. Its type name is often given as 'Express Les Mureaux', but the nose seems to confirm that it is really simply 'Express'. The title on the fuselage probably reads 'ANF Les Mureaux (Seine et Oise, France)'. There is a number 5 visible below that and on the wingtip. The aircraft was apparently delivered to the airline Compagnie des Grands Express Aériens (CGEA). Construction number 40 also given. Photo from: Bibliothèque nationale de France - Gallica

F-ESAC is listed as the sole Caudron C.92, but it still has C.91 painted on the rudder here. It is already fitted with the 370-hp Lorraine 12D engine associated with the new designation. The cabin windows of the four-passenger 'limousine' have been covered here for the Coupe Zénith contest in fuel-economical load carrying. Bad weather kept most of the competitors in the 1925 edition on the ground. Photo from: Bibliothèque nationale de France - Gallica

Orly has a history as a general aviation airfield and airship port, with two huge dirigible hangars completed in 1923. As you can see, aviators could replenish here on Castrol, Yacco or Mobiloil. The Dorand AR.1 was a World War I reconnaissance type which had a long civilian afterlife. F-CAFE and F-CAFV were registered to the Compagnie Aérienne Française. The August 1931 photo date is probably reliable. F-CAFE is listed as cancelled in 1925, but this must be in error since the Morane-Saulnier MS.137, F-AIJP, was not built until 1927. Some Harvards were flown by the Dutch navy in the late 1940s, and four more in the late 1960s under the UT-6 designation. For some reason the serials were 043, 044, 098 and 099. 098 and 099 were ex B-84 and B-164 in the air force. 099 had a mishap in November 1968 and was written off.
