The aircraft was dispatched for a bombing run enemy troops on the West side of Wageningen on May 12, 1940, together with a few other aircraft. They were intercepted by Bf 109's and the aircraft was subsequently shot down near Rhenen/Opheusden . The aircraft made a rough landing and flipped over, however both occupants survived the events. In 1939, the IIIrd Reconnaissance Group (IIIe Verkenningsgroep) was based at Gilze-Rijen with eight Fokker C.V variants (605, 617, 619, 621, 622, 631, 639, 645) and four Koolhoven FK.51s (408, 416, 419, 4.). 605 was originally a so-called C.VI variant with a lighter engine. 33 of these were built (and 212 C.V-D).

The Fokker C.V was a major late 1920s combat aircraft, selling to a dozen nations. Still in service in 1940, this example was the only Dutch prewar military plane to survive WWII. It is sadly displayed in a 'dark clouds of war' setting that doesn't do it justice in my opinion.

Fokker's succesful C.V was the principal aircraft in the Dutch army air force from the late 1920s. Refitted with a Rolls-Royce Kestrel engine many C.Vs were still in service at the time of the German invasion. 639 flew bombing missions against German airborne troops near The Hague on 10 May 1940. The C.V was numerically the most important Fokker aircraft of the interwar years. This original Dutch army aircraft survived WWII - the May 1940 German airborne landings around The Hague are depicted here. Unfortunately the Aviodrome still haven't fixed her cowling or maybe the engine buffs are having it their way.
