This F4U was built in 1943 at Vought's plant in Stratford, CT and is a rare example of the early "birdcage" variant. Assigned to the Carrier Qualification Training Unit (CQTU) at NAS Glenview, the aircraft was used to train pilots for carrier landings on the converted paddlewheel steamships USS Wolverine and USS Sable. Like the museum's Vindicator, it is another aircraft that fell into Lake Michigan in June 1943 while attempting a landing on the Wolverine. It was recovered from the lake in 2010 and was restored by the museum over 14 years, only recently being placed on show

Like a number of the aircraft in the collection, this SBD is another crash victim that was much later retrieved from the watery depths. Having survived Pearl Harbor, it sank a Japanese warship in March 1942 but ditched into Lake Michigan in June 1943 while attempting to land on USS Sable having been relegated to training duties out of NAS Glenview. It was raised from the lake in 1994

The N3N was the final biplane in US military service - the last used by the US Naval Academy were not retired until 1959. It was also unusual in that it was built by a government-owned organisation. The yellow floatplane versions were nicknamed "Yellow Peril" and this example is BuNo 1759 painted as 2693 which was destroyed in an accident in 1941

This is one of the two F/A-18s from the USS Saratoga that shot down a pair of Iraqi Air Force F-7As (Chinese-built MiG-21s) on 17 January 1991, the first day of Operation Desert Storm. 0627 was a BT-1 converted to the XBT-2, the progenitor of the Douglas SBD Dauntless. Its first flight as the XBT-2 was on 22 April 1938. It was assigned to NACA's Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory in February 1939 for full-scale wind tunnel tests. The XBT-2 had the characteristic perforated flaps, but here they appear to have been replaced. Photo by: Carl Mydans / Life

This is actually Tri-Motor N7861, delivered to the Union Electric Light and Power Company of Saint Louis as a corporate transport in 1928. In 1941 it passed to Johnson Flying Service, Missoula, MT for use as a sprayer then in the early 1960s as a smokejumper platform in forest fire control operations. Entered the museum in 1973 and restored to represent a USN RR-5 Tri-Motor

The 64 SON-1s built by the Naval Aircraft Factory were essentially Curtiss SOC-3 Seagulls. The 3-O-3 code indicates the third aircraft of the first section (red lower half of nose) of VO-3 (blue tailfin), thus assigned to the first ship in the 3rd Battleship Division, USS Idaho. See photo 422633 for more on this and note that VO-3 was converting to the OS2U Kingfisher around this time. Idaho sent to Atlantic in 1941 but returned to Pacific after Pearl Harbor. This was the second Skyhawk to be built, flying as a YA4D-1 in 1954 just two months after the prototype. Transferred to Naval Aircraft Rework Facility (NARF) in 1960 and emerged as a standard A4D-1 (A-4A from 1962), joining VA-83 at NAS Oceana until transferred to Naval Air Facility China Lake for tests in late 1962. Stuck off in mid-1963, it went into store at Litchfield Park but was retrieved by NATC at Patuxent River in 1967 for further testing. Finally retired in 1969 and by 1979 was with the museum and restored to its VA-83 colours
