The Bell 206 in its original form, tucked away in storage in Building 6008 at Fort Rucker where Alan Wilson managed to take a photo of it. The fourth Bell 206 airframe, it was formally the first military OH-4. Serial 62-4201 had also been assigned to a C-140 and the helicopter was reserialled 62-4202 in a paper move, but 4201 is nevertheless authentic. The OH-4 lost to the OH-6 Cayuse in the Light Observation Helicopter competition. The redesigned Bell 206A later struck back as the OH-58. Photo by: Alan Wilson

Powered by one T53 turboprop that drove two tilting ducted propellers, the VZ-4 was technically quite successful. The single airframe was built at Edmund Doak's factory at Torrance - Zamperini Field, California where the photograph was probably taken. Dayglo paint had been applied by the fall of 1959. Note the mispainted serial. Photo from: Vertical Flight Society

The Doak VZ-4 was transferred from Edwards AFB to NASA Langley in the autumn of 1959. There is evidence of a press demonstration at Davison AAF, Fort Belvoir on 13 October of that year. KDAA used to have a Rwy 31 and Hank Walker's October 1959 photos were clearly taken here. Photo by: Hank Walker / Life

The Hiller 1100 prototype, N81005 (c/n 1) first flew on on 21 January 1963. The type competed in the US Army's Light Observation Helicopter (LOH) competition and 62-4206 was the first YOH-5A. Although the serial is correct, it was found at some point that 62-4201 had been assigned twice, to a C-140 and a Bell YOH-4, and thus a few serials were changed, 4206 becoming 4207 in a paper exercise. This airframe was also NASA 530. Photo from: Wright State University
