This helicopter has had a long and varied history. Originally delivered to the GAF Lufttransportgeschwader 61 in 1958 with the serial GA119 (GA+119). After being transferred to the Navy she was allocated the serial SC+205 and then WE+543 with the newly formed MFG 5 in 1963. In 1971 she took over a fire fighting role with the Land Niedersachsen and was allocated the civilian reg. D-HEMD. She then served as a general workhorse/pleasure flight role before being rescued by the Aeronatuticum museum in 1998.

Originally delivered in 1984 to JBG-77 (note the squadron badge on the tail) she was scheduled to be handed over to the Volksmarine MFG-28. Due to German unification this transfer never happened and as the GAF never operated any Fitters (although allocated the serial 2505 (25+05)) she was retired and eventually ended up on display at the Aeronauticum museum.

After return from refurbishment in Hungary during 1988 she was transferred to the NVA-Volksmarine (MHG 18 'Kurt Barthel' based at Parow near Stralsund) as a VIP transport. After unification she was allocated the serial 94+01 and flew until 1994 when she was retired to the Aeronauticum museum. No aviation museum can have too many Gannets as far as I'm concerned! This example served as a submarine hunter with MFG 3 but was permanently grounded in1966 and found her fate was to be the gate guard at the Nordholz base for the next 30 years. She has been replaced in that role by a Breguet and so has moved across the road to the Aeronauticum museum.

The GDR coat of arms consisted of a hammer and a pair of compasses in a wreath of rye which ironically from a distance resembles the golden arches of a certain capitalist hamburger chain. The JBG 77 wing was named after Prussian field marshall Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher (1742-1819), who has converted to jet equipment.
