Spanhoe airfield was opened as Spanhoe Lodge in 1943 and was closed in 1945. It is now an unlicensed general aviation field with runway 27 visible here having been part of the taxyway of the original airfield. It was USAAF Station 493 and was largely used for troop transport for the Normandy invasion. Seen from Auster G-AJYB from about 1000 feet

Taken from a Super King Air on finals to runway 28. Rwy 10/28 has been extended since this picture to accommodate Dash 8s. The airport was built by the Australian Army in 1974. Until then the island depended on two Shorts flying boats (VH-BRC and BRF) that operated to Sydney off the lagoon at the far end of Runway 28. Tides and weather made the service unreliable, as did the age of the aircraft.

This is the terminal building at Ivano-Frankivsk, a building that contained far more cats than people and that smelled accordingly. The dry fountains at the front are also indicative of the decaying nature of the place, though some scheduled flights do operate from there. A depressing airport.
