Larry Bell envisioned a thriving market for personal helicopters would emerge after WWII and to be part of it he created the Bell 30 Ship 1A. It proved that a practical personal helicopter was feasible and it led directly to the Bell Model 47. This is just one of many ground-breaking exhibits on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

On March 7-8, 1949, 'Waikiki Beach' set a light-plane, nonstop distance record by flying from Honolulu, Hawaii to Teterboro, New Jersey. That is a distance of 4215 nautical miles, which is 315 nm more than the range of Concorde in the background! This is the fourth Bonanza built and is on display at the incredible NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

With "Department of Commerce" badge on rear fuselage. On 2nd October 1936, test pilot James G. Ray landed the AC-35 in a downtown park in Washington DC where it went on display. Later that month the aircraft was converted to drivable configuration by folding back the rotor blades over the fuselage, the propeller disengaged, the tailwheel put in gear and the front wheels used for steering. Ray then drove it through Washington to much acclaim to be handed over to the Aeronautics Branch at the main entrance of the Commerce Building.

This aircraft was acquired after WWII by George Bogardus, who named her 'Little Gee Bee' and flew her from Oregon to Washington DC in 1947, 1949 and 1951. These three flights helped to convince officials in the CAA and the CAB that amateurs could design and build light aircraft that were safe, reliable, and capable of practical cross-country flights. Legislation was passed in 1952 that sanctioned the registration and operation of amateur-built aircraft, leading on to the founding of the EAA.

'Enola Gay' at the Smithsonian Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center needs no introduction. I fully understand the overarching imperative of the Americans to end WWII as quickly as possible with as few casualities as possible on their side. I get that completely, yet after visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park & Museum a few years ago I found this a very sombre and thought-provoking exhibit.

This F-86A on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center of the National Air and Space Museum was assigned to the 4th Fighter Interceptor Group at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, in July 1949. It was shipped to Japan in December 1950 with other F-86s of the 4th Group, and flown in Korea. Most of its combat missions against Mig-15s were flown from Kimpo Air Base near Seoul. It is displayed in the pre-June 1952 markings of the 4th Fighter Wing, the first F-86 unit in Korea.

The J1N1-C reconn Irving was modified to become the nightfighter Gekko (moonlight) by incorporating an upward firing gun where the observer once sat. This is the last Gekko extant and is on display at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center.

The Bellanca CF high-wing monoplane was designed by Italian immigrant Giuseppe Bellanca, embracing a completely new vision and design in the early 1920s. Bellanca visualised the CF as a commercial transport aircraft but it was too far ahead of it's time before any market really existed. Only this example was built and it is now on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.

With this aircraft the famed racing pilot Roscoe Turner became the only three-time winner of the Thompson Trophy (his first win in 1934 was in a different aircraft). He retired from racing to manage the Turner Aeronautical Corporation in Indianapolis until his death in 1970. This racer hung in a prominent place from the rafters of his main hangar until restored and placed in the Turner Museum. With the closing of his museum in late 1972, the racer was gratefully received by the NASM.

The Navy accepted this airplane as an A-6A in 1968, becoming a Vietnam and Desert Storm veteran. Before retirement and display at the Udvar-Hazy Center, it accumulated more than 7,500 flying hours, over 6,500 landings, 767 carrier landings and 712 catapult launches.

The Ar-234 Blitz was the first operational jet bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. It's first combat mission, a reccie over the Allied beachhead in Normandy, took place on 2nd August, 1944. Although less famous than the Me-262, the Ar-234s that reached Luftwaffe units provided excellent service. On display at the Udvar-Hazy Center, this is the sole surviving Ar 234 B-2 and served with bomber unit KG76 from Dec. 1944 to May 1945 when British forces captured it in Norway.

Of all the larger exhibits at the NASM Udvar-Hazy Center I presumed beforehand that this Shuttle would interest me the least. However, once actually up close to 'Discovery' I was completely starstruck, just trying to comprehend fully what it had experienced and what it had achieved was quite awe-inspiring.

The XO-60 represents the final evolution of the Autogiro before the type became obsolete. The slow loitering speeds and almost vertical takeoff and landing abilities of the XO-60 made it ideal for military observation duties. However, the inability to hover sealed the fate of the Autogiro after the development of helicopters. This XO-60 was fully restored by the NASM in 1975 and is now on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center.

The C-4C was part of a family of biplanes developed by the Kreider-Reisner Aircraft Company to satisfy the need for a lighter and more efficient all-around aircraft to replace the ageing Jennies and Standards of the immediate post WWI era. This example on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center was manufactured in Aug. 1929, several months after Fairchild acquired Kreider-Reisner. However the data plate reflects the Kreider-Reisner C-4C Challenger designation, rather than the subsequent Fairchild KR-34 label.
