The R-4 was the world's first large-scale mass-produced helicopter and the first helicopter to see service with the USAAF and others (USN, RAF, etc.). This example was TOC in April 1944 with the USAAF and at the end of WWII became N92820 with United Aircraft Corp and used for testing by Sikorsky. This registration was cancelled in October 1955 and the helicopter had become part of NEAM by August 1994. This isn't the nicest of photos but it shows nicely the difference between the conventional drive-shaft driven rotor on the R-4B and the hingeless rotor of the Doman YH-31 in the foreground.

This DC-3 was originally ordered by American Airlines, but instead diverted to the USAAF and modified as a C-49J. The plane was built at the Santa Monica plant in California and delivered as 43-1973 in November 1942, remaining with the USAAF for most of the war as a troop transporter. It was SOC in April 1945 and converted to a DC-3 for Eastern Airlines. It later also flew with several other civilian operators before being purchased by NEAM in November 1992, with a total of 55,434 flying hours. The frame recently underwent a four-year restoration and is now on display in the Civil Hangar.

The TV-2 is a naval variant of the T-33 and are relatively rare today. This example was originally constructed under a USAF contract as T-33A-1-LO 53-5646, but it was the Navy that took delivery of the trainer upon completion in 1955. It officially became a T-33B following the introduction of the tri-service type designation system in September 1962. The plane served in the USN until April 1975, and was on display at NAS Willow Grove near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the early 1990s. NEAM acquired the Shooting Star on loan in 1992 and it has recently returned to display after restoration.

This NEAM Wildcat was a bit too blocked for my liking from the front, so I was left only with this bland angle from the rear. This plane served aboard USS Mission Bay in 1945.

In 1962, this aircraft set the altitude and speed record for an operational F-104C while stationed in Hahn, Germany with the 479th TFW, reaching 92,000 feet at Mach 2.5. After retirement the plane cane to the NEAM but was heavily damaged in the October 1979 tornado that devastated the museum and caused the complete loss of many airframes. The plane was placed in storage until November of 2009 when restoration began. It is now on display wearing the markings of the 479th TFW when it made its record breaking flight.

This HOK-1 was built in 1953 and spent its days assigned to the Kaman Flight Test Department. It was acquired by the NEAM in 1964 and plaved on display, before being stored and earmarked for future restoration. This was substantially delayed when a devastating tornado struck the museum causing the loss of many exhibits. The project was restarted in 2018 and completed in 2022. Note, the tail boom of this exhibit is from HOK-1 125530.

This Albatross was originally built as a SA-16A and was TOC with the USAF in 1953 as 51-7228. It was then transferred to the Coast Guard, becoming 7228 and a UF-1G. Around 1957 it was converted to an UF-2G, which was in September 1962 redesignated as HU-16E. It served at USCG Air Station Annette, AK and USCG Air Station Miami, FL (possibly others). By 1980 the plane was part of the National Naval Aviation Museum Loan Program at NAS Pensacola and four years later was transported to the New England Air Museum, where it is now on outside display.

The original Solution (NR10538), was a biplane with conventional landing gear, welded steel fuselage and fabric covering. This is the second aircraft, built for Jimmy Doolittle to race in the 1931 Bendix Trophy and powered by a 535hp supercharged Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Jr. It was further modified as the LC-DW500 Super Solution with a retractable undercarriage. Entered in the 1932 Bendix Trophy, but withdrawn after a belly landing due to the landing gear failing to extend forced withdrawal. The Laird Solution was restored as the LC-DW300 version over a period of seven years for display.

During WWII, this Hellcat was based at NAAS Santa Rosa, CA and assigned to VBF-11. Post war, it was used as a target drone but made a wheels up landing and was SOC during May 1956. Placed into storage upside down in a cradle at NAS China Lake. Over the following 17 years the wreck was stripped of almost all internal equipment and control surfaces. The hulk was transported aboard a Military Sea Transport to NEAM arriving in October 1973. Restoration was performed in Rhode Island over twelve years and completed in July 1992.

This plane was home-built by John F. Nixon from an original design by John F. McMahon. The plans called for the aircraft to be powered by a modified Model T Ford engine but this proved to be too heavy. Instead a Hall-Scott engine was installed that was so successful that Nixon used the plane in his work for Colonial Air Lines. It was flown until 1926, and then put into storage. In 1958 Nixon's son made four flights before a crowd, after which ot was again put into storage and later donated to the NEAM.

Excambian is the only surviving aircraft of three built by Sikorsky for non-stop trans-Atlantic service. Delivered in May, 1942 it then flew passenger-carrying flights painted in USN camouflage. It was under contract to the USN and Army until December, 1944. and then flew scheduled passenger service for American Export Airlines until late in 1945 when it was retired and replaced by land-based Douglas DC-4s. It subsequently flew for several different airlines, including Antilles Air Boats, but was damaged beyond economic repair in 1969. It came to NEAM for restoration and display in 1983.
