One of two aircraft built for oil magnate SEJ Cox to compete in the 1920 Gordon Bennett air race at Etampes in France. Handling problems and poor takeoff performance led to a rushed conversion to a biplane. Texas Wildcat was written off when it flipped on landing at Etampes at the end of its short flight from the Morane factory where the conversion had been done. The other aircraft, named Cactus Kitten, shipped back the US without being uncrated. It was converted to a triplane and came second in the 1921 Pulitzer Trophy Race. Photo from: Library of Congress
