This Grasshopper was built as an O-59A by Piper and was allocated USAAC serial 42-36790. By 1994 it had been registered N5777N and joined the USAFM the following year where it was presented to represent an L-4 that flew in support of the Allied invasion of North Africa in November 1942

Apparently repaired after an accident at Glendale, KY in January 1943 and stored at the Army Aviation Museum until fairly recently when put on display in these marks

In exercises like this one, US ground commanders had discovered that the humble Piper Cub was quite useful in the field. The army air force didn't like it and changed the O-59 designation for an observation aircraft to L-4 for liaison to stress that such 'puddle jumpers' would better stay behind the frontline. For the 75 years D-Day celebrations quite a few L-birds gathered at Saint-Andre-de-l'Eure. Unfortunately high winds prevented these from participating in the fly past over the beaches on the 6th of June.

In reality this aircraft served with the USAAF as 42-36790 and is now on display on the National Museum of the USAF.
