Pre production Mirage III which was used in the begining of sixties for high altitude test. This gatekeeper aircraft has been restored by a student team of ISAE (Institut Supérieur de l'Aéronautique et de l'Espace) to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this French prestigious aeronautical School.
After the Mirage III 001 prototype, ten Mirage IIIA evaluation aircraft were built. No 09, listed as written off on 20 June 1961, is missing an air intake cone. In the background is MD.312 Flamant F-AZEO, painted in South Vietnamese colours.
Not the Mirage III prototype (c/n 001), but the first IIIA pre-production aircraft, first flown on 12 May 1958 by Roland Glavany. The Mirage won the day over the impractical Leduc interceptors, in the background.
