This Widgeon was owned by the J. Ray McDermott Co. of Harvey, LA. in 1969. It had been modified with Continental O-470 engines in 1955. The McDermott Co. used Widgeons for supporting oil rigs along the coastal inland areas of the Louisiana coast. When most of the drilling moved offshore out into the Gulf of Mexico McDermott sold the Widgeons.

This HU-16 was one of several aircraft involved in the search for missing crewmen from the USCG Cutter White Alder. On the night of 7 December 1968 the White Alder collided with a freighter on the Mississippi River just south of Baton Rouge. All but three of the crew were lost. I took this slide late the next afternoon while the Albatross was being refuelled. This HU-16 was originally built for the USAF as 51-7218.

On 21 October 1967 at the NAS New Orleans Airshow this F-11A had an engine flameout just after taking off. It settled back onto the runway and continued off into a field beyond the end of the runway. The pilot was unhurt. The a/c was deemed unrepairable and remained at the base. It was then restored for display and mounted at the entrance to the base. It has since been replaced by a F/A-18 Hornet and is now on display at the airport in Reserve, LA.
