'One of the more amusing performances of the RAF Display [at Farnborough in 1950] was that of the Sikorsky R-6 Hoverfly 2s (KN841, KN842, KN846 and KN862) of the AFEE, Beaulieu, which were transformed into 'elephants' with the addition of pink trunks and waggling ears.' Three of them performed each day to the directions of the 'Circus Ringmaster', Flt Sgt J D Hayhow. AFEE was the Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment. 27 R-6As went to the RAF and FAA. The AW.27 was a large airliner first flown in January 1938. Ensign was the name given to the prototype by Imperial Airways, making this the 'class name'. The type's service debut was embarassing - three Ensigns carrying the Christmas 1938 mail for Australia all broke down. The Armstrong Siddeley Tiger engines were eventually replaced by Wright Cyclones. The 14 Ensigns built did transport work in WWII, including during the British evacuation from France in 1940.

Tailless research aircraft designed by Gustav Lachmann. It was completed in 1939 but not flown until June 1943 apart from an unintended hop in September 1942. The P for prototype marking was reportedly introduced on 2 July 1942. Aircraft made its last flight on 3 April 1946, total time less than 18 hours. Type designated HP.75 in 1945. It was aptly named Manx after an often tailless cat breed. Ironically the German designer was distrusted and interned on Man for some time. H-0222 was a Handley Page civil test registration.
