From 1926 the Wal was the mainstay of the Dutch navy's air fleet in the Netherlands East Indies, now Indonesia. The type was built under licence by Aviolanda in Papendrecht, Holland. Seen here off the fishing village of Volendam, D-21 was one of three to be flown - rather than shipped - to the Far East in April-May 1929. D-22 crashed in Baghdad. One of eleven Ju 52s that landed on frozen Hartvig Lake near Narvik on 13 April 1940, DB-QU was written off after its landing or possibly as a result of Allied air attacks. The wreck remains in the lake today. The origin of the photo is unknown but it would seem to have been taken in June 1940, after the ice melted and useful parts, including the left engine, had been removed. Of the eleven Ju 52s which famously landed on frozen Hartvig Lake near Narvik in Norway on 13 April 1940, this was the only one that could take off from the melting ice. Although bound for Oslo it strayed into Sweden and landed in a field near the village of Vallsta in Hälsingland. Its three crew were interned and the German crosses were overpainted with Swedish roundels, as can be seen in this photo. The aircraft was registered to the German embassy in Stockholm as SE-AKR on 27 August 1940 and flown back to Germany on 2 September 1940 by the courteous Swedes. Six early BV 138 'Flying Clog' flying boats were used as transport aircraft during the German invasion of Norway. This aircraft is seen landing troops at Sundsbukta near Hemnesberget, It was sunk here by a British destroyer according to the photographer, which would make it NG-UC, not NG-UD which was shot down nearby in the Ranfjord. First flown in 1938, the Do 26 was a transatlantic mailplane with two pairs of engines in tandem. All six built ended up in the Luftwaffe and the V1 prototype, Seeadler, is seen here disembarking troops during the invasion in Norway. This one and the V3 were destroyed by RAF Hurricanes in the Rombaksfjord near Narvik on 28 May 1940.

The Dornier Do 24 V1 prototype seen during trials. It was D-AIBE for some time and later Luftwaffe TJ-HR. This aircraft, powered by Jumo diesel engines, first flew on 10 January 1938 but it had been preceded by the Wright Cyclone-powered Do 24 V3 for the Netherlands.

The Do 24 flying boat was not initially selected for German use but on 12 April 1940 the V1 prototype, powered by Jumo diesel engines, was sent from Travemünde to Narvik with an urgent cargo of ammunition and medical supplies. The crew relied on an atlas sheet for navigation and reached their destination the next day after an adventurous flight. This quay still exists along Fagernesveien, Narvik. A torpedo had exploded under the jetty and destroyed the building on the right. Photo by: Gerd Böttger / Bundesarchiv

The situation was precarious for the German invaders of Narvik in April and May 1940 and a squadron of large seaplanes was formed to fly in supplies and reinforcements. From 10 May the first three BV 138A-1 production aircraft were involved in an operation in the Ranfjord area, landing troops near Hemnesberget. Two of them were lost. This should be NG-UC as it was sunk here at Sundsbukta according to the German photographer. Photo by: Karl Marth / Arkiv i Nordland

Fokker C.V reconnaissance aircraft at Soesterberg, the Dutch army air force's principal airfield. 632 was delivered in 1926 as 313, that serial implying a two-seat fighter. It was refitted with a Rolls-Roye Kestrel engine in 1935. The second machine, 647, was newly delivered in July 1935. Photo from: Bodo Sandberg collection
