Delivered on August 29, 1963, scrapped on August 18, 1975. Also visible in this photo are US Army deHavilland Canada U-1A Otter 55-3314 (c/n 177) and G-AOHE, a Westland-Sikorsky WS-55 Whirlwind Srs.1 of Bristow Helicopters, which was based at the airport for a short while.

Airfreight operation on behalf of the West-German company Orbital Transport und Raketen AG (OTRAG), to support the construction of a missile launch facility in Zaïre. OTRAG was formed in 1975 to develop and operate a low cost satellite launch vehicle, using an alternative propulsion system for rockets suitable for inexpensive mass-production. As such, the company was the first commercial developer and producer of space launch vehicles. They built a test and launch facility in Shaba, Zaire (near the equator), and the first test launch from the site took place on 17 May 1977. However, a full orbital launch vehicle was never assembled and the project ceased in the early 1980s.

In 1970 local airline Transair bought three of these Armstong-Whitworth Argosy aircraft to replace the DC-4s running freight up north. Being designed for European service they were a little short on range for the far north and so it was leased to Aer Turas from November 1971 to November 1972. In October 1973 it went to SAFE Air as ZK-SAF and was wrecked on 4 January 1990 when the LH gear collapsed.

Now a rare type with only a few survivors worldwide, this Argosy has been on display here since 1987.

Named Helios and it carries a 3 star plate under the cockpit. Based in Cyprus and used by the C in C Middle East as his personal taxi. Aircraft was broken up in 1989 at Cosford.
