This rarely-seen Texan was built for the USAAF but delivered to the USN as SNJ-5 Bu 84825 (X-A-N - get it?). It later went to the Spanish Ejercito del Aire as C.6-163, code 421-56. In 1992 it was registered in the USA as N29944 but crashed on take-off at Houston on 19 Sept of that year. It came to Australia for rebuild and was first registered on 12 Feb 1991. Even the redoubtable Auster gets stuck in sand! Awaiting a push out after breakfast. Built to wartime RAF order as Auster Mk 5, TW433, with a Lycoming O-290: first flight 12 Sept 45. Used by Auster for trials post-war 1947-48. SOR Apr 53 & sold the following year to Australia where it became the one and only Mk 5D Ajax, fitted with an in-line Gipsy Major & other civil mods. SOR 1971 - later rebuilt with an O-320 and returned to Register Feb 1983. Damaged by fire in Dec 2004 but rebuilt and looking good!

This unique aircraft was the only one of its kind ever made. Originally built as the only Blackburn-engined, aerobatic J.5K G-AMYI, 23 Feb 53. Converted to Gipsy-engined J.8L in '54 - a development of the J.5F Aiglet Trainer with centrally positioned flap lever and light alloy sheeting to the two inboard bays of the tailplane. Used as company demonstrator till '55. Sold to Australia '77 becoming VH-UYQ. Third rebuild completed the day before this shot was taken.
