This aircraft was painted to compete in the 1994 JASDF combat competition. At that time, the JASDF's F4EJs were undergoing a change of paint scheme from their official gull gray to the new air superiority camouflage. This aircraft's standard gull gray paintwork was overlaid with a bluish-gray overlay to resemble the new air superiority camouflage.

Prior to participating in the 1994 JASDF Combat Skills Competition, 301SQ had two of its F4EJ Kai aircraft painted entirely in the forest camouflage of the F1 fighter they were using as a hypothetical enemy. These aircraft were used for advance training as fake aircraft. The vertical stabilizer was even painted in silhouette to further enhance the appearance of an F1 fighter. This is a comparison photo of the paint jobs of the two aircraft. The dark and light green parts of the forest camouflage have been painted in reverse.

It's rare to see an F4 taxiing with its boarding ladder still attached. The aircraft that participated in the 1999 JASDF combat competition was painted with a morale-boosting design. The nose featured a shark's teeth pattern, and the left air intake splitter vane featured an illustration of a skull piercing a missile, the symbol of the opposing AGR.

Ahead of the 1999 JSDF Combat Skills Competition, the shark-mouth paintwork began on the aircraft to boost morale. On this day, it was still incomplete. In the background of this photo, you can see a row of F4EJ Kais from the 302nd SQ, which had flown in from Naha Air Base on Okinawa Island for pre-competition training ahead of the competition.

This aircraft is equipped with an Air Combat Maneuver Instrument under the right wing. This ACMI is for F15J or F2 fighter jets, so an F4EJ equipped with it is extremely rare.
