Ahead of the 1999 JSDF Combat Skills Competition, the shark-mouth paintwork began on the aircraft to boost morale. On this day, it was still incomplete. In the background of this photo, you can see a row of F4EJ Kais from the 302nd SQ, which had flown in from Naha Air Base on Okinawa Island for pre-competition training ahead of the competition.

The aircraft that participated in the 1999 JASDF combat competition were painted with morale-boosting designs. The nose featured a shark's teeth design, and the left air intake splitter vane featured an illustration of a missile piercing a skull, the symbol of their opponent, the AGR.
