A general PMI's North apron overview that unfortunately won't be possible anymore. On September 28th, 2004 the old ATC tower was demolished 44 years after its construction in 1960, in order to allow the handling of forthcoming traffic to the then new Mallorca airport: Son Sant Joan. Its original use was terminated in 1987 and lately it only was giving shelter to some communications equipment and small offices for several airport services. It was also an excellent watchtower to photograph traffic.

Lufthansa inaugurated services to Sydney in April 1, 1965 using Boeing 720Bs, the only airline to operate this model Boeing on scheduled services to Australia. Boeing 707s soon replaced their smaller sisters. The photo shows one of the last 720B services approaching runway 07. The Lufthansa schedule conflicted with my need to be at school - I was 14 - and this turned out to be the only time I saw a LH 720B close-up.

Delivered new to Lufthansa in June 1961. Sold to Pan Am as N785PA in January 1966. (Famously made the TV News on 14 August 1962 when it landed sans nose-wheel in a shower of sparks at Heathrow.)
