Yellow shirts are worn by aircraft handlers and aircraft directors that shuttle aircraft around the carrier's tight and chaotic deck. Catapult Officers and Arresting Gear Officers also wear yellow shirts. Because yellow shirts are so involved with taxiing aircraft, they are often featured prominently in dramatic photos depicting carrier deck operations. Based at NAS North Island, this aircraft came to El Centro to practise simulated carrier landings. Unit is VS-41, the 'Shamrocks', please note the appropiate tail marking.

Note the extra housing on the ES-3A Shadow fuselage top compared with the S-3 Viking. This example served with VQ-5 based at NAS North Island, CA and was retired to AMARG after the squadron was decomissioned in May 99 where NK-727 is now stored with the PCN/Inventory No. AN2S0043.

Accepted by the US Navy January 1976 and struck off strength June 2005, this Viking is presently displayed at the Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum, on loan from the National Naval Aviation Museum.

This S-3 served previously with VS-41 at NAS North Island, CA before being retired to AMARG during Feb. 06 where she is stored with the PCN/Inventory No. AN2S0102.

This aircraft was lost in a crash on 6 December 2000, although the crew ejected safely.

This Viking has a rather interesting history. First retired to AMARG in Oct. 77, she waited five years in the desert before being 'regenerated' (hence the R in AMARG) to serve with VS-21 at NAF Atsugi, Japan. Her last deployment was aboard the USS Kitty Hawk before being retired (finally?) to DM during June 08 where she is now stored with the PCN/Inventory No. AN2S0059.
