Free French units flew P-47Ds late in WWII. Thunderbolts continued in service with the French air force, and fought in Algeria in the 1950s. This aircraft, US serial 44-20371, is seen in the WWII hall of the Musée de l'Air.

Early P-47D recovered from Papua. Wears incorrect serial - should be presented as 28066. Later sold to the USA.

Former USAAF 44-90438

Early production P-47D from Republic's Farmingdale, NY, plant. Named "Mary" and serving with the USAAF's 369 Fighter Squadron, 359 Fighter Group, at RAF East Wretham, Norfolk. Obtained 60 years ago.

Confederate Air Force P-47D at their HQ airfield in 1975. The aircraft was ex Peru Air Force 119. This crashed on 9 Feb 1980 but was rebuilt using parts from other aircraft and eventually became G-THUN, N147PF and back to G-THUN.

The P-47 was the heaviest single-engined fighter to see action in World War II. Turkey used 180 Thunderbolts from 1948-54. This one, US serial 44-33712, was previously coded TC-21.

The P-47 was built around a huge engine and supercharger.

Although Yugoslavia developed its own Ikarus S-49 as an interim fighter-bomber prior to the arrival of jets, in addition 150 F-47Ds were obtained from 1952 (23 of them from France). They served 10 aviation regiments and the last operated until 1961. This example was formerly 44-90464 in USAAF service
