43-48092 was based at Bentwaters with the 81st, which was initially a fighter-interceptor group. In 1955 it gave up its F-86s for F-84Fs and became a fighter-bomber group. The changed role can be seen in the badge behind the cockpit, which signified a nuclear strike role. It is not known if the photo is at Bentwaters, Sculthorpe or Shepherd's Grove. This F-4D arrived from Carswell (TX) at Selfridge (MI) with some mechanical problems in June 1988. As the 457th was nearing a transfer to F-4E, the USAF decided to leave the old F-4D at Selfridge, awaiting what to do. Eventually, the aircraft was used for Aircraft Battle Damage Repair training at Selfridge. Luckely, I pictured the Phantom before it was tortured. In May 1990, the F-4D was donated to the Freedom Memorial Park, Sterling Heights (MI) where it arrived in August 1990.
