The aircraft is used by the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for various tests, adversary training and target towing in support of Indian Armed Forces. The Albatros is assigned a Indian Navy serial for ease of use without getting into civil certification hassles. This L-39 is former NX39MX which was cancelled from the US civil register in December 2020, and exported to India.

The unit was commissioned on the Alizé at Hyéres by Amb. Nawab Ali Yavar Jung on 21 March 1961 as IN's first ship-borne ASW/MR unit, flying off INS Vikrant. The "Cobras" transitioned to the Do-228 in Aug. 1991. True to their motto 'First In and Last Out', INAS 310 remains the Indian Navy's most decorated unit, having received three unit citations.
