Powered by an engine of only 20 hp, the Daimler L20 did well in the 1925 German Round Flight, crossed the Alps in winter in February 1926 and is seen here making an appearance at an airshow in Malmö. Designer Hans Klemm could still not persuade Daimler to undertake series production, and did it under his own name in 1927. Construction number is unconfirmed. Photo by: Hans Ryberg / Flygvapenmuseum

A nosewheel Harvard? Well, an NA-16. The fixed tailwheel gear NA-16 was introduced by Sweden before WWII. 52 Sk14s, plus 83 Sk14As with Piaggio engines, were built by ASJA and Saab. Some of these were modified to Sk14N standard with a nosewheel to train Saab J21 pilots. The tailwheel was simply retained. The SFF website indicates that serial number 696 was coded 5-105 on the photo date. Photo by: Flygvapenmuseum

The Austrian Phönix D.III fighter and Phönix C.I scout were purchased by Sweden following demonstrations in Stockholm in 1919. The C.I was manufactured at the air force workshops as the E1/E2 'escort fighter', gaining the telling nickname Dront (dodo). The designations were changed to Ö4 (advanced trainer) and A1 (attack aircraft) in 1926. This airframe, originally delivered with serial 626, was not retired until 1935. After several changes, it then wore serial 693 with a prefix for F1 wing at Västerås - Hässlö. Photo from: Flygvapenmuseum
